Barent Winne built a large dock, warehouse and general store near his beautiful brick home along the Hudson.
If you’re heading north on the 87 freeway in New York and you turn off onto River Road towards Henry Hudson Town Park, you’ll see Barent Winne Road. This road has a ton of history and you can learn more about the story here. The Winne family was a large part of the bustling New York economy in the 1700 and 1800s. But for some reason the dock and the buildings around it were destroyed at the height of the Rockefeller family’s popularity. Coincidence?
Aerial photos of the destruction
Check out the aerial images below. The destruction of Winne Dock occurred during the Nelson Rockefeller administration.
In 1952, before Nelson Rockefeller took office, the dock and warehouse looked to be in good shape.
By 1968, since Nelson Rockefeller has taken office as Governor of New York, you can see that there are no large shadows and the structure is completely gone. Looks like there is a small boat tied to the dock, so maybe the dock was still partially usable at this point.
A better aerial from 2011 shows the warehouse building totally gone with trees planted in place and grass planted on top of the dock.
