Peter Winne was a legend when it came to acquiring large amounts of land in the State of New York. A descendent of Pieter Winne, the Winne family’s hard work in the colonial era, came with large land grants and patents.

The land patent focus in this post is of over 2,000 acres belonging to Winne that currently sits under most of what is now Great Sacandaga Lake in The Adirondack Mountains of New York.

The map pictured below, was found among the papers belonging to Abraham Hun who was deceased. The map was left in the General’s office by B.S. Rensselaer in 1833.

The obvious questions we have are:

  1. Why was a reservoir built here? Why was it really built here?
  2. How many more lost maps, land patents or land grants exist that have yet to be discovered?
  3. Did Peter Winne sell all of this land?
  4. Where are the land records showing sales of all the land?

In the two images below, you’ll see the area in red that was owned by Peter Winne and the overlay of the patent.
