Another mystery (in addition to the changing of the Winne surname) surrounding the family is the Winne Street in downtown New York City. The street was located where present day “Mott Street” exists and was part of Bayard’s East Farm. Initially the majority of the street was called Winne Street with only the China Town section that angles to the south, Mott Street. Records indicate the farm was surveyed in 1771 or maybe slightly earlier.
However, in 1805, somehow the decision came very abruptly to change the name from Winne to Mott. Evidence shows that the change was unauthorized, which adds to the mystery of it.
